What to do right now
Do these in order. Do not stop to mop or to hunt for a towel until the water is off.
Burst pipe steps
- Shut off the water. Turn the main valve clockwise until it stops. It is usually near the water meter, in the basement or utility room, or where the line enters the house. If you cannot find it or it will not turn, call us and say so.
- Cut power if water is near electricity. If water is dripping through a light fixture or pooling around outlets, switch off the breaker only if you can reach the panel without stepping in water. Otherwise stay out and call 911.
- Open the lowest faucet. Run it to drain what is left in the pipes, which also eases pressure on the break.
- Take photos and video. Capture the broken pipe, the wet walls, floors and belongings before you move anything. Insurers ask for these.
- Move what you can. Lift rugs, electronics and papers out of the wet area.
Do not try to repair gas, electrical or main-line pieces yourself. If you smell gas, leave the house and call Nicor Gas or 911 before you call us.
When a burst pipe is an emergency
Any pipe that is actively spraying or running is an emergency. So is a pipe that has split inside a wall, even if you cannot see the water. A slow drip is urgent but not always a middle-of-the-night call.
If you are unsure, call (630) 822-9290 and describe what you see. The plumber will tell you whether to wait for morning or whether to send someone tonight. We take calls at night, on weekends and on holidays.
Frozen pipes and winter breaks in Hoffman Estates
Winter is the main cause of burst pipes in this part of Illinois. Water expands as it freezes, and the pipe splits where the pressure builds, usually just past the ice plug. The damage often shows only after the ice melts and water starts to flow.
Village code puts the frost line at 42 inches, which tells you how deep the cold reaches. NWS data for O'Hare shows a January average low of 18.8 F, and the lowest daily normal low is 17.9 F in late January. Pipes in exterior walls, garages, crawlspaces and unheated basements are the ones at risk.
If a pipe is frozen but not yet burst, keep the water on at a trickle, open the cabinet doors below the sink and warm the area gently. Never use an open flame. When the thawed pipe shows a crack, shut the main and call.
Cracked or broken pipe repair options
Not every burst pipe needs the same fix. The plumber looks at the pipe material, the size of the split and how much of the line is weak. The choice then comes down to speed, cost and how long you want the repair to last.
| Option | What happens | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Spot repair | Cut out the split and splice in new pipe | One clean failure in sound pipe |
| Section replacement | Replace several feet of pipe | Corroded or repeatedly failing run |
| Reroute | Run new pipe around the damaged area | Pipe inside a finished wall or slab |
| Repipe | Replace the whole supply system | Multiple failures or aging pipe |
A single split in copper pipe is often a quick spot repair. A pipe that has failed twice in a year is telling you something else is wrong. In that case, repiping is worth a conversation.
Copper, PEX and other pipe materials
Copper is common in older homes and holds up well, but it can split when frozen or pit from the inside over time. Plastic piping such as PEX tolerates freezing better, though fittings can still fail. The plumber identifies what you have before choosing a repair.
Mixed materials call for the right connectors. Joining dissimilar metals without the right fitting can cause corrosion later. That is one reason a licensed plumber matters here. To talk through your pipe type, call (630) 822-9290.
Broken supply valves and fixture lines
A burst under a sink, behind a toilet or at a washing machine is usually a supply valve or braided line, not the main pipe. These fail more often than most people expect and can flood a room fast. The fix is often a new valve or line, and it can be done at the same visit.
If a valve will not shut off, close the main and call. For a leaking faucet or toilet that is not flooding, see faucet and sink repair.
Documenting the damage for insurance
Your photos and video matter. Keep the broken section of pipe if the plumber removes it, because an adjuster may ask to see it. Write down the time you noticed the break and when you shut off the water.
The plumber can give you a written description of the cause and the repair. Water cleanup and drywall are separate trades, and your insurer may have preferred vendors. Call (630) 822-9290 if you need a plumber's note for the claim.
Pricing for burst pipe repair
What changes the price
You get the price by phone before work starts. The plumber also gives you an updated number if the damage turns out to be larger than it looked. Nothing is done without your say-so.
Permits and the Illinois Plumbing Code
Emergency repairs can start right away in Hoffman Estates. The Village asks that a permit be submitted within 24 hours after work begins. Its fee schedule lists a plumbing permit at $75 plus $10 per fixture, and a sewer or water service repair at $75.
All plumbing work follows the Illinois Plumbing Code, 77 Ill. Adm. Code 890, which the Village adopted. A licensed plumber handles the paperwork. If the burst is on the buried line from the street, our water service line repair page covers the extra steps.
According to that code, new pipe and fittings are judged on materials and joints, not on whether the leak has stopped. A clamp or push-on fitting that holds tonight is often a stopgap, and the permanent repair is done once the pipe is open and dry.
Burst pipe questions
Yes. The line is open 24/7, including holidays. Describe the break and a licensed plumber is sent as soon as one is available.
Close the main water valve, open the lowest faucet to drain the lines and photograph the damage. Keep clear of any water near outlets or the panel.
It is usually near the meter or where the line enters the home, often in the basement or a utility room. If you cannot find it, tell us on the phone and we will help.
Public Works handles shutoffs at the street box, called a B-box. Call them at 847-490-6800 if your indoor valve fails, then call us.
That depends on your policy and the cause. Photos, video and a note from the plumber help your claim.
Frozen water expands and splits the pipe. Exterior walls, garages and crawlspaces are the usual spots, so keep heat on at 50 F or higher when you travel.
Sometimes. Leak detection can narrow the opening, and a reroute may avoid the wall. The plumber explains the options before work begins.
Many repairs need one, and the Village asks for it within 24 hours of an emergency repair. Your plumber handles that for you.
